Over the last week, I have been enjoying a new found hobby of creative writing. Obviously I have written for this blog for over a year, but I see this format of writing as more factual and opinion based. Being able to write freely about anything, from someone else’s perspective has been a fascinating experience. I’m not going to explain why my story is about, as I have only just come up with the idea. While the general plot is mapped, I never expect the story to see the light of day or be finished, my A-level studies preventing me from being a 24/7 writer.
I was inspired to do some creative writing in many ways. I have loved to read fiction since I could read. Getting into the head of another character, sympathizing with them, willing them to succeed is so fulfilling. There are many fond memories of me reading Enid Blyton, Antony Horowitz and, especially J.K. Rowling. Having rewatched the Harry Potter film series to show my sister, I have been inspired to re-read the books. The way she writes, the detail in her characters and the depth of the Harry Potter universe is simply mind-blowing. Writing fiction isn’t simply coming up with a plot and writing it. The amount of planning is far beyond anything I could have imagined. Making character pages, plotting the whole novel in bullet points, constructing family trees and even drawing a map of the area the novel is set in. Don’t get me wrong, I love every element of this. It’s so rewarding to know the ideas are mine. While I will have undoubtedly got inspiration from other people, the characters I create come from my hand. Nobody else ever has to know about them! It seems everyone has a hobby that relaxes them. For some it is yoga, others drawing. Some are even relaxed by climbing a mountain (not for me, thanks!). I’m pleased to have found that writing, whether it’s fiction or factual, is what I love to do. After busy days, where I wish to unwind from remembering facts, coming home and seeing what I can create will be something I look forward to for the rest of my life. ***************************************************************************************************************** Politicians are set to return to the Commons this week. Back after a student style summer holiday, MPs will debate the European Union withdrawal Bill. This bill really will overshadow everything. In some ways, Brexit is allowing Parliament to discuss a huge number of issues, because of the EU’s influence in so many issues. In other ways, the obsession with Brexit is preventing British domestic policy from properly taking place (educational and health reform, for example). There are already disagreements about the time allocated to the bill. According to the Observer, Labour and Conservative MPs fear the bill will be curtailed. This is ridiculous. Whether you voted leave or remain, surely we can all agree that the bill should be open to proper scrutiny, debate and opinion from all sides? That is, after all, what we voted to take back control of, right? I see so little unity on Brexit from either of the main parties. The Tories have a small, but significant number of heavily remain MPs, that could bring down Theresa ‘I had a majority but squandered it’ May’s Government. For Labour, Keir Starmer says the party are united, but, from what I have read, it seems the official Labour policy is to only remain within the single market during a transition period before leaving it. I see all the time on twitter that a large number of Labour MPs wish to remain in it forever. Can we please have some clarification from parties that are supposed to represent public opinion? ****************************************************************************************************************** On Thursday, I will be attending my first induction day at my new sixth form. After two and a half months of not doing much, part of me is looking forward to the orderly routine that college offers. I’m looking forward to my courses: English Literature and Language, Government and Politics and Sociology. To me, they are all perfect and I hope the content lives up to my expectations. There will be far more independence at sixth form college. I hope I can use my initiative to research things without being asked, discover interesting facts and make a coherent set of notes to revise from. Most of all, I’m looking forward to meeting new people with similar interests. There are a number of societies and clubs to get involved in, many of which looking very appealing. Sixth form last for only two years, so I intend to make the most of every second I’m there.
