In just over 24 hours, the polling stations for the 2017 UK General Election will have shut. After weeks of campaigning in an unexpected snap election, it will all be over. (I won't say for the next 5 years, because, let's face it, who knows when another election will be called?!) The politicians can do no more - all the power will be in the hands of the people. Many publications have endorsed certain parties, willing their readers to put their cross in a certain box. Whilst I do not regard my blog as any sort of serious publication, I thought my small band of loyal readers may be interested in how I would vote, if I could.
My view is: vote for who you want. I don't believe that people should vote for someone, because they have been told too. Instead, they should make up their own minds. Though next to nobody normal reads the party manifestos, all of them are available and downloadable. A simplified version of where parties stand on key issues is easily accessible at the BBC. I would advise all voters, especially undecided voters, to take a browse - perhaps do the political compass test. People say politics shouldn't be about leadership. I disagree - to me, leadership and policies go hand in hand. Successful policies cannot be implemented without the right leadership and a leader isn't any good unless the policies are right. Based on the many leader debates, look at who you want running the country. The debates, interviews and interrogations, both by broadcasters and the public, are very helpful when making your decision. This election, like all other UK elections, is not Presidential. In the polling booth, you are not directly voting for Prime Minister. You are voting for a local MP to stand up for your community at Westminster. It would be very helpful to find out the candidates standing in your area, watch local hustings online and see how each candidate intends to represent your community. I would look for someone who is independently minded and doesn't follow the party line. This shows they are willing to put the interests of your area before the interests of their party. Whether their policies are any good is another matter! Above all, I believe people should vote for the party willing to tell the truth about the difficulty of the next 5 years. A party with a positive, but realistic, outlook on a post-EU Britain. A party that will keep the public safe and deal with the root causes of terror. A party that recognizes the huge benefits managed migration brings. A party willing to invest and reform public services. A party ensuring the richest pay their fair share and encourage the poor into decent jobs. Who is the party offering all these things, I hear you ask? Well, I'll leave the voters to decide.
