The October half term is finally here. I couldn’t be happier. Though I’ve loved my first six weeks of sixth form, meeting lots of new people and learning fascinating courses, being able to lay-in and relax for a week is always appreciated. A week long break helps to split up the term, two sets of six weeks per term sounds more appealing than one, endless 12 week slog. However, I have much to do throughout the next eight days. I certainly won’t be resting for over a week…
1) Relax Yes, I may be 16, which means endless work, but a break of some form is surely justified. Experiencing a state of mindfulness, where I sit, think of events and do nothing must be positive for my mental health. Perhaps I should take the advice of Tim Loughton, a Conservative MP who spends an hour every morning in the bath. Why this made news I don’t know, we’re out of silly silly season now and just in…errr….silly season. Nevertheless, the advice seemed helpful! 2) Tweet One of my main forms of relaxing is looking through twitter. Though this, like Question Time and Any Questions, can make me want to punch my computer, I learn so much (hopefully accurate) information through the platform. Reading what people I admire are getting up to, tweeting my own opinions to look back on, make some sarcastic remark on something I dislike are all fun activities for me. I’ve found twitter is normally best enjoyed while listening to a podcast. That is, until you start tweeting the transcript of the podcast unintentionally. 3) Read My list of books to read is huge. Yes, I have a written down list and physical books that I have purchased. They currently lay in a heap on my shelf, so I notice them and don’t forget to read them. Once I’m finished, they can be arranged nicely on my bookshelves. Recently, I’ve joined GoodReads, an excellent site for book recommendations and a place to make a list for books. Getting into the mind-set of protagonists, fictional and real, is so rewarding. Life feels too short to see it just from one perspective. 4) Work College is out, but, sadly, that doesn’t mean the work stops. Even in October, I’ve started making flash cards for summer exams. The felt tips will begin to re-enter my life again, as I make mind maps. There is so much A-level content that revision has to begin very early. The courses have been extremely insightful so far. However, that doesn’t mean they’re easy! It feels strange that, just a year ago, I was revising for my year 11 mocks. How time has flown. 5) Blitz my bedroom My bedroom has lots of things in it. Some things I will treasure and never get rid of. For example, my set of Harry Potter books and John Green collection will always remain with me. On the other hand, there are some things that need to be donated to a better cause – charity - but, in the hectic busy time that is life, I’ve never got round to doing. I look forward to finding items I thought had vanished, before deciding what to do with them. 6) Write! One of my favourite hobbies, along with reading and looking at cat photos, is writing. Of course, I have written this blog for nearly 18 months and love doing it. Now, I’m gradually getting back into fiction writing, finding the experience of character creating and plot development truly the best. An idea that only I know about, only I have to know about. So much time has been spent on it that the first draft of this blog is being written the afternoon before its publication. Whoops! So, there’s my half term. Sadly, we’re not going away anywhere this October. The weather gradually becoming chiller, so heading to the stunning British coast won’t be quite so enjoyable. However, I look forward to the Christmas season beginning: buying gifts, wrapping up warm, singing Christmas songs. For some, that’s a while off. For me, it’s already begun. To fellow sixth formers celebrating half term, enjoy. It’ll be over in a flash…
