Well, Donald Trump's first week as leader of the Free World has been interesting, to say the least. Watching his inauguration, I was naive. I believed that Trump officially becoming President; having the power and responsibility over everything would make him far more statesmanlike. Not at all. While he remained relatively diplomatic during a press conference with Theresa May, his policies, personality and temperament seem no different. The amount of policies introduced under Obama repealed under Trump is substantial. This may appeal to his supporters, but for everyone around the world, it's extremely worrying.
Donald Trump's views on torture, particularly waterboarding, appear inhumane to me. Believing that torture ''always works'' seems morally wrong and factually incorrect. Numerous studies have shown that torture does not work, and, when trying to extract information, can result in false information (red herrings), slowing down progress. Whatever information the American secret services are trying to gain, I don't believe torture is the answer, especially when information is wanted after the event has occurred. I hope Donald Trump has some sound advisers who present strong evidence against torture. Thankfully, Theresa May has maintained her opposition to torture. I hope they can agree to disagree. To Donald Trump, climate change is a hoax made up by the Chinese in order to prevent the US from building power stations and factories. This is utterly ridiculous. Climate change is a massive, worldwide issue that does exist and is accelerated by human activity. It's shocking that the leader of the free world, someone who should champion sustainable energy, simply denies the issue. 2016 has been the hottest year on record and this will only get worse, unless action is taken. American leaving the Paris Climate Change Agreement will make things worse. I don't believe this means stopping fossil fuels usage all-together, but increasing awareness and use of sustainable energy. The idea that the Chinese created climate change is ridiculous, with the idea first proposed in the late 19th century, by a scientist who found doubling carbon dioxide increased the temperature by 5-6 degrees Celsius. Need I go on. Early in his Presidency, I witnessed Donald Trump signing a file, which would stop American providing money to companies whom perform abortions. While many welcome this, I believe it is wrong. When it comes to a child, the parents should be allowed to decide whether they would like it or not. Of course, I want to see the number of abortions reduced, especially as a means of contraception. Outright banning of it, particularly in cases where the fetus is a harm to the mother, would be extremely dangerous for society. Many abortion clinics contain information about other alternative action that could be taken instead of an abortion. With no funding, information about contraception and family planning in general could be limited. Mr Trump has openly stated his opposition to the US-Iran nuclear deal established under Barack Obama, planning to ''rip it up.'' What he intends to replace to replace the deal with, I don't know. I believe the deal was a good thing, stopping Iran from nuclear rearmament, which could have had catastrophic consequences. Allowing Iran to trade with other nations should help its development, increasing life expectancy and quality of life. Simply ending the deal won't help anyone. As for other bits of foreign policy, though I welcome his policy not to intervene in every crisis, I worry about Trump's isolationist views where help is necessary and needed. The ambition to create more jobs in America is fine, but how it will be executed is far from clear. The ban on citizens from certain countries is shameful. Presuming that *all* Muslims are terrorists is ridiculous beyond belief. This doesn't mean I have criticisms of Islam, or religion in general, but banning all who follow it in certain countries is no immigration policy and will not make the issue go away. The issue is particularly harrowing with vast numbers of refugees being turned away, instead of welcomed and helped into America. Europe has done its part, why won't Trump allow America to take its fair share? On Mexico, I'm pleased the Mexican President rejected Trump's meeting, regarding plans for his wall (a.k.a a few fences). Protests all around the world have been helpful in showing Trump that no everyone agree with him. As President for at least 4 years, he must include those who weren't on his side. Every decision he makes will have influence, not just in America, but all around the world. From a Democrat perspective, the fight for beating Trump in 4 years time begins now.
