Just outside of Cambridge is a fine village called Great Eversden. The poshest of houses, smooth country roads and beautiful nature all greet your journey there. It is an idyllic location so distant from the rest of civilisation. Indeed, I quipped that it would be the perfect place to set a Midsummer Murders or Agatha Christie, for it couldn't be a utopia. It had to contain some flaws.
This remark of murder however, is not reflective of the divine restaurant where my family and I spent a lovely Sunday indulging to conclude the festive season. Within the heart of the fine village is ‘Cam Spice’, a local curry house containing all the curry products anyone could possibly require. Its exterior is quaint and smart, a perfect addition to the aesthetic pleasure of the local surroundings. Parking was no trouble whatsoever, with the car park easily visible and smooth navigation (by the drivers that is). I didn’t realise quite how formal or highbrow the restaurant was. Tables were laid out formally with well designed, cushioned black chairs. Cutlery was presented in silver service style, presentation clearly dominating how the owners wanted people to remember their experience. Even a water tank helped to compliment the internal architecture as we were made to feel comfortable and privileged in our newfound location. Throughout our two hours there, we were the only customers. This was excellent, it was like we had especially booked out the restaurant with the attention all on us. I found the menu easy to follow and clearly laid out. The section devoted to vegetarians/vegans was thoughtful and showed an appreciation for those of us ammeter with curry foods and what automatically does or doesn’t contain meat. Below each of the meal names was a useful brief description of the food, which certainly assisted me in narrowing down the specific product I wanted to enjoy. Before the meal however, we were given splendid popadoms with sauces, the perfect starter to getting in the curry mood. I have long been a believer that a curry has to contain many parts - popadoms are at the bedrock of that, so I’m delighted my internal hope was met. For my main, I decided on Saag Aloo, a vegetarian option descriptor as sautéed spinach with ginger, onion, ground spices and potato. It is most pleasing to say that was exactly what I received - the flavouring was to die for with perfect spices all contributing to a brilliant meal. The potatoes were well presented with onion and ginger running through my meal. For my side, I choose garlic chilli naan, because who has a curry without naan bread?! The clue was in the name, but I found this quite the spicy food, which some water helped manage immensely. I am not especially cultured or well equipped to food. My cooking skills - as people I know can attest to - are dire beyond belief. I don’t eat out especially often, meaning every time I do brings a new experience. That was certainly the case with the delightful Ferrero Rocher dessert containing huge ice cream, delicious sauce and, once again, beautiful presentation. It helped to reinforce the reputation of where I was eating and just how special a place it was. There is one thing often underrated within pubs: their toilets. I have many criticisms of Wetherspoons but their local branch has the best loos I know. Seriously. This was also the case in Cam Spice, where we were directed respectively into ‘Kings’ and ‘Queens’ lavatories, the large playing cards on the doors indicating who went where. People, throughout their lives, have far too many stories to disclose of truly appalling toilet experiences. I am so pleased to say that Cam Spice has not contributed to another disastrous tale. The customer service was fantastic with extremely friendly staff ready to cater to every one of our needs with reasonable pricing that reflected the quality of the restaurant. Plates were easily cleared as my family wished to enjoy all the delicious on offer that we knew, in that specific form, wouldn’t be wholly available elsewhere. Cam Spice may be located outside of Cambridge city in a beautiful village which feels a million miles away from anywhere else, but their juicy, delicious foods and the extremely pleasant experience will remain with me far into the future.
